High up at 2,275 metres above sea level, nestled within the unique mountain panorama of the Dolomites, stands a museum that is as fascinating as the subject it explores.
Accessible only by cable car, at the summit of Kronplatz (in Bruneck, South Tyrol), the ‘Lumen – Museum of Mountain Photography’ brings the impressive world of the mountains into sharp focus across a total area of 1,800 square metres.
A museum on the next (height) level
Spread over a total of four floors, the museum guides its visitors through the early days of photography with historical exhibits, before bridging the gap to the here and now with both contemporary installations and digital innovations.
Alongside its permanent collection, the Lumen Museum also hosts exciting temporary and special exhibitions. The programme is curated from various angles, including mountaineering, tourism, politics, spirituality and history, to explore the thematic world of the mountains from different perspectives.
One of the museum’s most impressive highlights is undoubtedly the Hall of Mirrors. Not only does it playfully challenge the distinction between illusion and reality, but it also succeeds in highlighting the atmosphere of the mountains through a truly artistic and poetic lens. Another guaranteed eye-catcher at the museum is the former cable car entrance to the building. This has been transformed into an oversized lens, offering a breathtaking view down into the valley.
Drawing on its unique location in conjunction with its distinctive architecture, the museum itself has become a total work of art. In this way, the Lumen succeeds in providing a setting for very special perspectives and insights, and manages to sharpen its visitors’ gaze far beyond the beauty of the Alps.
